COMPUTER AIDED DESIGN (CAD)

The traditional way to make a custom jewelry piece in the past has been to sketch the concept, then carve a wax model. It is then used to make the mold that we use to cast the precious metal. While these traditional methods are still used and available here at Wyatt Austin, most items are made utilizing one of our state of the art CAD (computer assisted drawing) systems.

Gemvision's Matrix Jewelry software™ allows us to build jewelry models on the computer in 3D and then make a realistic rendering of the item that shows your choice of metals and stones. Many pieces are made to fit the exact dimensions of your own stones. Above all, both systems serve as an unbeatable communication tool. There are no questions about how the finished product will look. While many jewelers are just now getting on the CAD bandwagon, Wyatt Austin has been using Matrix for the better part of two decades. Staying at the forefront of modern technology, we added Gemvision's CounterSketch program earlier this year.

While we still use Matrix extensively, CounterSketch allows you, the customer, to experience hands on control during the design process. With CounterSketch you are the designer. People who are confident with their computer skills may "play" with the ring at our design station to their hearts content. This system is already populated with thousands of rings. It allows you to choose a ring style and make many modifications to the piece, always viewing it in 3D. Start with round diamonds flanking the sides of the center stone to princess cut rubies in a few clicks of the mouse, see how you like it. Change it again and again until you have your signature ring! There are thousands of possibilities with this program. Once the CAD model has been finalized, our talented crafts people set and polish all the surfaces of the ring, finishing it to your specifications.

For those of us who have been heartbroken over a lost piece of jewelry, the CAD system adds further assurance that your special piece can be made over again, exactly the way it was. Because we store your CAD file in our archives, we can pull it out in the event that your custom designed piece becomes lost or damaged, and recreate for you.

Whether we utilize hand carving, Matrix or CounterSketch, you can rest assured that the custom department’s long years of hands on jewelry experience will help you make good design decisions and ensure that you will have jewelry of the highest quality for years to come.
