A Surge in Custom Jewelry Sales During the Holidays

Holidays are the season of giving and gifting. Jewelers usually experience big sales during this time of the year. But of late off-the-shelf pieces have been receiving much less attention than personalized custom-designed jewelry.

Mostly engagement rings and wedding bands, people hoard local jewelers with requests for custom jewelry. This is part of the mass deviation from generic diamond jewelry and popular styles.

According to Luke Whittaker, the key for jewelers is to listen to their customers. Read this interesting piece from the Daily Astorian.

The holiday season is an important season for businesses across the spectrum, but the season of giving is particularly important for jewelers big and small.

Thirty-three percent of all engagements happen between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day, according to WeddingWire, a wedding planning site. That fact, plus Christmas presents, means the period accounts for 36 percent of jewelry store sales, according figures from the Economics & Statistics Administration.

“Twenty-five percent of engagements happen during the holidays, which is significant,” said Holly, co-owner of McHone Jewelers along with her husband Kevin.

“We do 25 percent of our business during the holidays. That’s typical,” she said. Crafting custom jewelry is the focus for the business, located at 1150 Commercial Street in Astoria.

“We’re always busy with custom pieces around the holidays,” she said. The nature of the giving season lends to increased sales.

“Then there’s the sentimental nature of giving something personal,” McHone said. “Jewelry is very popular for that.”

Alternative stones, metals popular

Since opening their doors more than 12 years ago, the family-run jewelry business has witnessed trends in the industry and has built their business around listening to the customer.

“We still predominantly see diamonds for engagements and wedding,” McHone said. “But saphires in any color are becoming more popular. If you want something different, you can go with a sapphire and make it more unique.” A preference for silver has since shifted to varying colors of gold.

“Everybody wanted white gold,” McHone said. “But now they’re going more with yellow gold.” Aside from traditional silver and gold rings, the store started carrying alternative metal pieces about eight years ago with a growing demand for more durable rings. With a hardness twice that of traditional gold and silver, alloys such as titanium have become more popular, particularly for those in more rugged occupations including logging and fishing.

“They’re a great alternative for guys who use their hands a lot,” McHone said. Titanium is also corrosion resistant and more durable for when working in the wet environments that are prevalent in the Pacific Northwest. The store also creates jewelry with local stones and agates.

“A lot of people love that we have Oregon stones,” McHone said.

“We have Oregon sunstone, opal and agates. Keeping it local is very important not only for Oregon customers but also our tourists.”

Designing the perfect piece

The material and shape of a ring is not only influenced by personality, preference and budget, but also profession. A ring designed for the rigors of logging or fishing profession would come with a different set of considerations compared to a piece destined for someone medical field, where wearing gloves necessitates a lower profile.

“A lot of people in the medical field need a lower profile because they’re putting gloves on all the time,” McHone said. The custom jewelry is designed using a computer-aided design and drafting program (CADD).

“We can do just about any design you can think of. We design just about everything with CADD program,” McHone said. “And we then mill a wax model or we use our new 3D printer.” The possibilities for custom jewelry creation are nearly limitless, one customer, a Coast Guard rescue swimmer, had a ring crafted from a piece of steel he hung off of while in the helicopter. It typically takes four to six weeks from design to construction when it comes to custom jewelry. In-house laser repairs is also available making extensive jewelry repair possible.

“We’ve just always tried to keep evolving and changing with technology within the business, not just designs,” McHone said.

“The most important aspect is listening to the customer, so they get what they want.”

#LoveIsLove

June 1, 2014 same sex couples may be married in Illinois.  It’s a law now, but that doesn’t mean that people in love aren’t already wearing wedding/commitment jewelry.  Wyatt Austin Jewelers is happy to show some of the wedding jewelry that we’ve already designed for several same sex couples.

Custom designed wedding rings for lesbian couple.  We used their diamonds and gemstones to create their rings. One-of-a-kind

We had a lot of fun working with this couple.  We also made a couple of pendants for them with some additional gemstones they wanted to use.  Everything we made for them was one-of-a-kind and they loved them.

Note the detail in the inset. “Always” is how long they will love each other.

Custom Diamond Engagement Ring

The two rings above are being worn by a lesbian couple.  The first ring with the single large baguette diamond on the sides was a total surprise. She was so nervous picking out the diamond and designing the ring.  On her initial visit, she brought in a family member.  Then she brought in a friend on her second visit.  After that, she felt more comfortable with what she was doing and had much more confidence.  I’ll tell you what, it’s not easy buying something for the single most important person in your life who will wear the ring the rest of her life.

Man-gagement Ring

Man-gagement Ring with Diamond wedding band

These two pictures are of a ring for a man.  The two textured bands represent their two lives connected by a single diamond. The diamond, which is the hardest natural gemstone shows the strength of this couple’s bond.  When they marry, the interchangeable diamond wedding ring will fill the gap between the tow bands.  There can be multiple wedding rings, that can be made of any color metal with any color gemstone.  For example, he can have additional wedding rings for times he may want to wear rubies or sapphires.

We’ve made rings with words inside.  We’ve designed rings with a couple’s initials on either side of the center.  One time, we set black diamonds in the shape of an initial under the center diamond setting.  We placed a pink heart under the center diamond.  We designed a ring with butterflys on either side of the center.  There’s really no end to what we can do.  Everyone wants to add their personal detail to their ring that sets it apart from all other rings.  No two rings are ever made the same.

One-of-a-kind.  One-at-a-time.  Just how you like it.

Winning is Magical!

Winning is Magical

GO HAWKS!! Chicago Blackhawks had a big win last night. They were victorious over the Minnesota Wild in game six of the series in overtime. Now they advance to the Western Conference Final. SWEET! Blackhawk fans have high expectations their team will bring home the Stanley Cup, again. It feels soooo good to cheer for a winning team!  Heck, you don’t even need to know anything about the game to watch it on TV. People gather in the neighborhood taverns and sports bars just to be part of the excitement as everyone cheers with delight as another goal is scored.  The big air horn blows from the surround sound speakers throughout the establishment as the crowd jumps up from their seats, slapping high fives with the nearest six or seven people laughing and screaming. Then, they order another round so they’re ready for the next big score.

And then, we have the Chicago Cubs.  True Cubs fans will always bleed blue.  It doesn’t seem to matter to them that their team can never seem to achieve the ultimate golden ring and win the World Series.  It’s been over 100 years.  Why bother even keeping score?  The excitement isn’t there.  People who gather to watch the games aren’t jumping up and down nearly as often.  Every year, the season ends with the same phrase, “we’ll get ‘em next year.”  And every spring they begin the season with, “this is the year the Cubs take it all.”  And, I genuinely hope that one year the Cubs will take it all.  The fans absolutely deserve it.  Not too many fans for other teams will ever be as supportive.  Wrigley Field has amazing attendance numbers. But wouldn’t it be great if they did win?  If the Cubs win, excuse me, when the Cubs win we will see a miracle before our eyes.  There’s so much pent up energy in Cub fans just waiting to be unleashed.  Now, that would be magical!  And you know what?  I’ll be right there with them slapping high fives with everyone next to me.

Everybody loves to win.  Most of us experience wins every day.  Some wins are as typical as getting to work before the boss walks in.  Others are more exceptional.  Some are even life changing.  Have you had any of these?

Wyatt Austin Jewelers: It only took 30 years of Technology

Back in 1984, Wyatt Austin Jewelers opened the doors in Schaumburg, Illinois.  Who knew how many changes could possible happen in 30 years.  Okay, so it’s not as big a deal as inventing the assembly line.  But in that retrospect, look how long that took since the invention of the wheel. Not too long after that, man was shooting rockets into space then a couple of decades later, walked on the moon. That was when they built an entire room for a computer.

As I sit at my desk, writing on my laptop, I realize that I’m really outdated.  Yes, I have a Smart phone, but I have a slow learning curve.  My phone is still smarter than I.  But, of course it is. Three years ago I didn’t even know what a smartphone was.  How many people can say they had a smartphone 3 years ago?  Only about 10% of adult cellular phone owners. Now, 58% of cell phones owned by American adults are smartphones.  As a side note, about 90% of American adults have cell phones.

Jewelry and manufacturing technology has changed a lot in the past 30 years, too.  True, on the goldsmith bench, you’ll see many of the same tools.  But, there’s a huge difference in Jewelry Designing.  We used to make a sketch or a model out of clay before turning the process over to a wax carver.  Now, we design jewelry on the computer.  Then we download the file to mill the model on a CNC machine or grow or print the model on a 3-D Printer.  The best part of this process is everything comes out symmetrical.  And there’s a bonus.  We can take the original file and make a duplicate or create a new ring to match.  So, we design the original engagement ring now.  Closet to the wedding we design the wedding ring to match.

And, there’s more.  Let’s say you’re tired of the style of your wedding ring after 20 or more years.  We can also give jewelry new life by creating a new wedding ring with a more updated look.  You’ll look and feel like newlywed. The ring pictured below on the left is something designed in the 1980’s.  The classic look of three rows of channels on either side of the center was a very popular style that always looked good with a large fancy shape diamond.  However, for this client, the ring looked tired and drab.  We redesigned the engagement ring into a more updated halo style ring that she can still wear with her wedding band.  Do you think anyone noticed?

Whether it’s a new ring you want to look as individual as you are or a ring you’ve been wearing all of your adult life, you deserve to have what you want.  Sometimes having something made custom for you can be scary.  But with Computer Assisted Design (CAD) technology, it’s much easier to grasp what you’re end product will look like.  And, you will love it because you helped design it.  It’s one-of-a-kind made just for you.
